The 69-Prompt Mirror: What a Gait-Reading Camera System Tells Us About Verification

Sometimes the code says more than the press release. When I first read the documentation for the OS Investigate tool, the underlying contract was only one line long, but from there it took me about a week to understand, and then it stayed with me far longer than I expected. Buried in its architecture I found 69 preloaded AI prompts, and those prompts turn a fleet of Flock cameras into something much heavier than a simple observational tool. The result is a surveillance network that can identify individual people not by their face, not by their license plate, just by how they move. Walking, limping, striding, pausing—each gait becomes a signature. In a single deployed site, a machine algorithm can call you back not by what you carry, but by the physics your body projects into a public space. For the blockchain and decentralized protocol community of which I am a part, this is more than a privacy story. It is also a measurement story, and a boundary story. When I say I spend my days in decentralized protocols, I mean I spend my days talking to protocols that make their logic legible to anyone. That legibility is the whole point. If I publish a smart contract, I can read the truth in the source code. Consensus is not owed to a hidden door. The OS Investigate system is exactly the opposite: the 69 prompts are likely loaded, the model parameters are buried, and the most important decisions—who is included in a crowd watch, what a person is rare to be—are hidden inside neurons that no human can directly inspect. There is no audit path. There is no audit trail. There is only an output. For the crypto industry, which was born from a demand for transparency, this represents a reversal of assumptions. We asked, ‘How do we know a claim is true without trusting the website?’ The surveillance world is asking, ‘How do we know the claim of an authority is true without trusting anyone?’ Actually, they answer that they trust themselves. Here is the key insight I draw from my experience building decentralized finance infrastructure: just because a system is accountable does not mean it is explicit about what it is accountable for. In the DeFi interest rate models I have analyzed, the code is open, but the assumptions that feed the code—the money supply, the capital flow, the human behavior—are opaque. I have been working with the 2020 DeFi Summer protocols, where I learned that even a slightly biased interest curve can inflate and crush a user’s account. At the scale of a city, a biased gait model means that certain neighborhoods, certain walking speeds, certain ways of carrying a bad shoulder or a heavy hip, are flagged far more often than others. They are then captured in the model’s memory—not in public records but in a private network that no one can inspect, repair, or delete. And this is the moment I have to step in with a contrarian perspective. I have heard some of my colleagues argue that surveillance AI is a useful tool for a public good. ‘If you are not official,’ they say, ‘you have every reason to cooperate with the watch.’ Then we need to cross the line together. Consider that hack as a consensus event. A blockchain consensus fails when a single evil block gets accepted by the majority out of pure greed. It is no different with an OS. When a city deploys a Flock camera set, the protocol limit is not legal; it is a technology’s greed, meaning it says, ‘I can deliver security at any cost’. The cost is the possibility of a genuine moral error. The system will continue to flag you, and it will be the sole operator of truth. If you are short on track, if you are tall, if you have an unusual limp, if you run at day, the network has a record of you, even if you are entirely innocent. In a decentralized society, we have a ‘proof-of-identity’ concept, still based on the ability to check any single actor. With OS, there is no proof of anything; there is only an opinion of the AI, and there is no possibility of an appeal to tomorrow. What I want to emphasize, with my responsibility as a communicator of this technology, is that consent and auditability are not two separate things. They are one single piece of the same problem. In my work with a decentralized AI protocol, I have pushed to include a human-in-the-loop for every output released to the public. The collected biometric data must be stored in an open ledger; the prompts that govern behavior must be open to external testers; the authority to watch must be rotated among independent agencies with no conflicts of interest; and a suspicion’s output must revert to a heartbeat review. That is not a utopic requirement, it is a mechanized minimum. I have learned from my own custody of a DAO that mourned the collapse of Terra: when a network’s code is a facade, the humans are the ones who pay. The humans here are not just the 69 prompts; they are 69 different decision layers of a neighborhood we live in. We do not need to wait until the night a mother is embed for simply walking through her own parking. We start by holding the prompt maker accountable, by first asking whether the data is public, and by deciding whether the question of ‘who am I’ is better answered by my knee or by the city. The real ledger is not mathematics; it is the same as the layer of trust that we share, or that we lose. A system that knows me by step has no incentive to protect me, only to predict me. That is a decision we did not ask for. And the only agent that could have asked for it is the one whose identity is silently stored in a 69-prompt’s memory. Connect first, transact second. Always. Trust is not a feature of a system; it is a process between a system and the human soul. The soul has no expressions; the soul has signing keys. The crypto world has taught me that the highest vision of a creator is not of a better audit, but to become a more honest person, and to build. A surveillance system that says ‘I know you’ is not the same as a system that says ‘I secure you’. If we cannot open the box, if we cannot audit the central private architecture, we are not building a public society. We are building a prediction engine and surrounding it with better a better excuse of silence. We can change. But only if we put the rights of a walking person above the value of a watched person.
