The thesis was that games built on blockchain technology, with every asset, mechanic, and line of game state rendered to a public ledger, would create economies that players actually own. Not a Web2 game with an NFT shop bolted on. A game where the chain is the authority for everything: the pirate you mint, the treasure you hoard, the quest you complete, the battle you win. The studio's pitch was that onchain provenance would turn digital entertainment from a black box into a verifiable, trust-minimized market. That thesis is now formally dead at scale. The fully onchain game is not more expensive than a Web2 game by a factor of ten. It is more expensive by several orders of magnitude per marginal action. The architecture does not just tax the player. It taxes the studio. And the tax comes due on every session, forever. The standard response from the onchain gaming community is the meta-transaction: the studio pays the gas on behalf of players. That is technically true. And economically, it is a subsidy. A subsidy is not a business model; it is a price distortion that tells capital markets the product is too expensive to run. When the studio cannot refinance, the subsidy ends. When the subsidy ends, the game dies. I have watched this exact pattern play out before. The result is that the user base of a fully onchain game is systematically biased toward the least loyal segment of the population, while the studio spends its capital subsidizing their participation. This is not a marginal strategy problem. It is a structural one. When the studio's subsidy drops, the farmers leave, and they take the network effects with them. The deeper structural problem is what I call the honesty tax. A fully onchain game cannot be quietly patched. The game logic is released as smart contracts. The rules are immutable. When a boss is too hard, when an economy is imbalanced, when a progression curve is broken, the traditional developer patches within minutes. The onchain developer must either write around the existing contracts, launch a migration, or ritualize a governance vote. Until that bar is cleared, the rational position is the empirical one. The fully onchain thesis was a bold hypothesis. The data has now falsified it. The technology worked as designed. The economy did not. And no amount of narrative can change what the chain recorded. Data doesn't lie. Follow the chain, not the hype. The chain kept the receipts. And the receipts say the price of purity was too high.
